Plastic flaps loose at freeway speed, offers no security at all, and does not protect you the way glass does in a collision. Treat it as a way to get the car home or to work, not as a solution for the week.
When a side window shatters, most of the tempered fragments fall into the hollow cavity of the door and settle onto the window regulator, into the run channel and around the lock rods and speaker. Removing that glass is a genuine part of the replacement, not an optional extra. Left behind, it scratches the new pane, binds the regulator and rattles every time you shut the door. We vacuum the cavity before the new glass goes in.
